Ferdinand Hodler was born in Bern, in the year 1853 and he lived a poverty-stricken childhood into a family that struggled to make the two ends meet. His father, a cabinet maker was’t really an artist but he had the heart of a creator and Ferdinand Hodler was inspired from his childhood. But he soon breathed his last and Hodler's mother remarried. His step father was a painter and a decorator. This marked his foray into the world of art. But tragedy did not leave him in peace Ferdinand Hodler’s family members, all of them including his parents and siblings eventually died of disease.

Ferdinand Hodler first became an apprentice to his Stepfather and learned some of his first lessons in art. Eventually he moved to Thun and there he worked with a local artist. By the age of 18, he shifted again to Geneva and this was the very city in which he would spend most of his adult life painting and producing artworks. Ferdinand Hodler attended Geneva Art School after he settled their and started working under Barthelemy Menn (1815-93).Under the influence of Menn, Ferdinand Hodler finally working on his own stylization. Menn was a successful and celebrated Swiss artist, who had been trained under the guidance of the Swiss history painter duo, Jean-Leonard Lugardon (1801–1884) as well as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867). Menn was also a good friend of Corot through whom Ferdinand Hodler was first introduced to the artworks of Corot.
